Join the party! We’re talking about my most indulgent books today!
What does indulgent mean, anyway? I guess probably different things to different people. For me, in my writing, it’s those guilty pleasure scenes you write just because you think it would be so cool to do what the heroine is doing, or because it’s a steamy scene you’ve imagined but never had the guts/opportunity/rubber chicken to try out for yourself.
I did exactly that in my Buffalo Intimidators series. I give my heroines all sorts of cool jobs, just so I could have the vicarious, indulgent thrill of doing what they’re doing. I made Kelly a restaurant owner in Head Games because even though I worked in restaurants for years during college, I never owned one. I was never the cook. So she got to be the cook and I got to look up all sorts of yummy recipes for her to make.
Another heroine, Liz from Double Vision (which released on September 12th) owns a high-end clothing boutique. And while sure, she’s got her fair share of problems–and maybe more than her fair share–who wouldn’t want to unlock the doors of your business every day and gaze upon all the gorgeous items you stock?
Sometimes I insert little things into a sex scene that sound hot but aren’t anything I could/would ever try. Then when the characters experience it, I can see it through their eyes and it’s almost as good. Almost.
One commentor will win a signed set of Romance Trading Cards from the second book in the Buffalo Intimidators series, Cold As Ice, as well as an e-copy of Head Games, book 1.
